2009 AUGUST WILDFIRES UPDATE AS OF 09-01-09 @ 1000 HRS
CEOC STATUS REPORT
09-01-2009- 1000
Event Name: 2009 August Wildfires
Station Fire:
The Station Fire is now estimated to be 121,762 acres and 5 percent contained. Winds are expected to shift from the northeast to the southwest this afternoon and increase to 30 mph on the ridge top, which is expected to increase fire activity later in the day and push the fire in a northeast. There is a possibility of later afternoon thunderstorms over the San Gabriel Mountains that could result in strong downbursts of wind and thunder cells which could affect firefighting operations.
The goals of the firefighters are to keep the fire west of Highway 39 and Angeles Crest Highway, east of Interstate 5, south of Highway 14, Pearblossom Highway, and Highway 138, and north of the foothill communities and the Angeles National Forest Boundary. Steep terrain, old growth brush and hot dry weather are factors that drive fire activity.
Firefighters are working to build fire line and protect structures within areas affected by the fire. Areas of concern include the communities of Juniper Hills, Little Rock and Pearblossom. The Little Tujunga area is still active fire area as is Mt. Wilson.
An estimated 53 residences have been lost; 4,300 structures are under mandatory evacuation orders. Firefighting costs are estimated at over $13 million; 3,655 personnel assigned to incident. A new Fire camp has been set up at Central Park in Santa Clarita.
