Accidental Drowning at Lake Piru
Nature of Incident: Accidental Drowning
Location: Lake Piru, California
Date & Time: May 22, 2010 @ 1445 hrs.
Victim: Roberto Barrios 36 yrs. Glendale
Narrative:
Roberto Barrios was camping at the Lake Piru Recreational Area with a group of about 25 people celebrating their recent graduation from nursing school. On May 22, 2010, at approximately 2:45 P.M. Barrios and others were boating on the lake in a pontoon boat. Barrios and two friends began to swim in the lake. After swimming for approximately five minutes the wind started blowing and blew the boat away from the swimmers. Due to the rough water, the swimmers were unable to swim back to the pontoon boat.
A nearby boat rescued two of the swimmers. The pontoon boat was unable to maneuver close enough to retrieve the victim before he went underwater.
The Sheriff’s helicopter with a rescue swimmer and diver aboard arrived at the lake within minutes and immediately started searching for Barrios. A Search and Rescue team of divers was dispatched and is continuing the search.
