During the summer of 2010, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety will be hosting two Leadership Training Academies. The Academies were established to provide young men and women (ages 13-16) with a structured one week learning environment. The academy is designed to challenge the participants mentally and physically while learning key aspects in leadership.
The participants that attend the academy are introduced to a highly structured in which they will live in. Classroom activities, outdoor leadership reaction courses, compass navigation sites, and rappel towers are a few of the activities the youth will engage in.
The Academy will be hosted at the Fort Custer Military Training Base in Augusta, Michigan. There will be two Academies again this summer. The young men will attend June 20th to June 25th. The young women will attend August 15th to August 20th. Approximately 35 young men and 35 young women will be chosen from an application and interview process to attend the Academy.
Application packets are available at every neighborhood association, Public Safety Fire Stations, and the Public Safety Headquarters. Applications must be returned May 17th to the Public Safety Headquarters. After all applications are submitted, interviews will be conducted to choose the participants.
There is no cost to participate in the Academy. All uniforms, meals, and housing is provided free of charge for all young men and women attending the Academy. For additional information please contact Community Policing Officer Kenneth Skibbe at email@example.com
