PREVENT A THEFT - MPD reminds you to remove your GPS unit when parking your car. Don't give thieves an easy target.

PREVENT GPS THEFT - The Morristown Police Department wants to remind you to secure your GPS units, cellphones, and anything else of value when parking your car so you don't present an easy target of opportunity for thieves. Here are some good tips:

1. Remove the GPS unit from the windshield or dashboard and clean any suction cup marks.

2. Take your GPS unit or valuable item with you (best option) or lock it in your trunk.

3. Remember to remove and hide any suction cups or power cords which could alert somebody that a unit or phone is in your car. Store them in the trunk along with the GPS.

4. Write down the make, model and serial number of your GPS unit or phone so you can provide it to Police if it is ever lost or stolen.

5. Finally, change the HOME address from your current address to an address in your neighborhood. Thieves have used this information from stolen GPS units to commit home burglaries around the state.

Remember to follow these steps whenever possible so that your car is not an easy target.
