MODESTO POLICE BROADCAST ON NIXLE

Modesto, CA – The Modesto Police Department is now broadcasting vital crime and public safety information via Nixle.com. The free service allows pertinent information to be relayed to the residents of the city.

Nixle is a platform which allows law enforcement and government agencies to quickly disseminate breaking news and crime information in a number of ways. Subscribers to the free service can receive information via text message, email, or by logging into their Nixle account on the internet.

The Modesto Police Department has distributed information on the well-known social networking site, Twitter, since the fall of 2008. Since that date the Modesto Police Department has accumulated more than 1,000 followers showing the community’s great need and desire for relevant and timely information. The Modesto Police Department will continue to post information on Twitter through an interface at Nixle. Crime and public safety information is simultaneously posted to Twitter when a Nixle message is created and sent.

Nixle has several features that make the service valuable to the Modesto Police Department and the citizens of Modesto. The secure platform allows police officials to deliver “targeted” information to an area as small as ¼ mile radius from the location of the event or as far as 20 miles. The distribution is dependent upon the address entered by the subscriber. For example, a resident who lives near Claus and Yosemite may not receive isolated crime information from an incident that occurred near Sylvan and Oakdale. In most cases the user will enter their home address; however multiple addresses can be entered (work, child’s school, etc).

The Modesto Police Department sees boundless uses for the new service, including locating missing persons, issuing urgent crime advisories, traffic delays, and other dangerous situations.

Those interested can sign up by visiting www.nixle.com and completing the simple registration information.

Interim Modesto Police Chief Michael Harden said, “We are always open to new ways to keep the citizens of Modesto better informed. Nixle gives us the means to provide relevant and timely crime information and we believe this is critical to promote an effective partnership between the officers on the street and the people they serve”.
