Police are investigating a crash between a pedestrian and a Plymouth Voyager Van. Edward Kirby (age 65) of St. Petersburg drove into the parking lot of the Gandy Center to pick up his fiance who was at this location applying for admittance to the ITT Technical Institute. The fiance was standing on a sidewalk outside the main building near the disabled parking spaces. As Mr. Kirby approached, he failed to step on his brakes and may have pushed the accelerator instead. The van struck the 65 year old woman. She was transported to the St Petersburg Northside Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 5:09 PM. Mr. Kirby was also transported to Northside Hospital, suffering from chest pains. Investigators at this point do not believe the crash was intentional but are investigating this crash as a DUI. Charges are pending. The victims name will be released upon notification of family who live out of state.

The victim is identified as Lillian L. Benson, age 65, of St. Petersburg, FL.
Charges have not been filed as of this date, pending blood/alcohol toxicology reports.
