National Police Week (May 9th - May 16th) and Peace Officer Memorial Day (May 15th.

May 15th has been National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week containing May 15th has been National Police Week, since President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 on October 1, 1962.

Last year 116 peace officers across the nation were killed in the line of duty, down nearly 16 percent from 2009 but still way too high. It is unfortunate that California leads the nation with the highest number of police deaths in the line of duty. Over the years in Solano County alone, 17 officers have given the ultimate sacrifice while serving the citizens and community they were sworn to protect.

Each year, during this week, Benicia Police Officers, as well as other officers across the nation pay respect and honor to those that have laid down their lives "In the Line of Duty". All officers will adorn their badges with a black band across the face of the badge during this week and all patrol vehicles will be displaying a blue ribbon on the antenna. On Friday, May 14th, the United States flag in front of City Hall will be flown at half-mast.

The California Peace Officers' Memorial Ceremony will be held at the State Capitol on May 7th. Officers from across the state will be attending. Locally, the Retired Peace Officer's Association and Solano County Sheriff's Office will hold the Peace Officer's Memorial Service on May 4th at 12 pm. The ceremony is held at the Wall of Honor in front of the Solano County Sheriff's Office in Fairfield.

"As with all law enforcement agencies in Solano County, attendance at the ceremony has become tradition," Benicia Police Chief Sandra Spagnoli said. "It provides us time to pay our respects to those fellow officers and friends that have lost their lives in the line of duty."
