Pharmaceutical Disposal Program Set to Begin on Tuesday Aug 18, 2009 at Florence's Justice Center. See full message. 
The Pharmaceutical Disposal Program, developed in conjunction with Peace Health Hospital, is set to begin on Tuesday August 18, 2009 at the Florence Justice Center. Members of the Florence community are encouraged to stop by the Justice Center to dispose of expired or unnecessary medications. A large white collection box has been placed inside the Florence Justice Center that has been clearly marked “Pharmaceutical Disposal Only”. Members of the community may bring their expired medications or medications no longer needed to the Florence Justice Center and dispose of them in that collection container. The collection box will be available only during normal business hours when the Justice Center lobby is open to the public. The box will be under 24 hour recorded video surveillance for security purposes and will be emptied on a regular basis.
This program was developed to in response to the need to do more to prevent potential misuse or abuse of these prescriptive medications and to prevent accidental access of these medications by children. This program was also a method to reduce or prevent the adverse impacts to our environment since most medication that is unused, outdated, or no longer needed has been disposed by flushing into the wastewater system.
Materials that are not suitable for disposal with this program include syringes, needles, sharps, radioactive materials, chemotherapy materials, aerosol containers, or any medical supplies. Peace Health Hospital will be working to provide information to pharmaceutical outlets and assisted living care facilities to ensure the public is made aware that when medications are no longer needed they may be disposed safely without impacting the environment.
