Crime in Ward 7: Belleville residents and police will talk about what to do
News-Democrat
Residents, city leaders and police will meet tonight to talk about crime in a Ward 7 neighborhood in Belleville, and specifically about two recent reports of shots fired in the area.
The public roundtable discussion is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Belleville City Hall, 101 S. Illinois St.
Mayor Mark Eckert, Ward 7 Aldermen Jack LeChien and Phil Elmore, and Belleville Police Assistant Chief James Spargur and Capt. Don Sax are expected to attend the meeting.
"Usually it just takes one instance to make people nervous, and it's happened twice. It's two more than we like to see," Elmore said.
Police are investigating the following incidents:
* Some young men fired four shots from a silver vehicle April 11 in the 100 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue.
* Neighbors reported March 3 that they heard gunshots in the 100 block of North Virginia Avenue. Police later found four .45-caliber casings near a home and two rounds were found in the home's exterior wall.
No one was injured in either case.
Elmore said police will not talk about ongoing investigations but will share tips on what to look for and how to report crimes effectively to the police department.
