Mother Arrested for Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor

On 4-14-10 the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office arrested a mother for failing to require her 12 year old son to attend school. As of today’s date the student has missed a total of 119 days out of 140 school days this year. This is the first such arrest in Bradford County in almost 20 years.

Under Florida State Statute 1003.26 the Bradford County School Board has met all requirements to correct this issue by attempting to coordinate with the defendant. Deputy William “Bear” Bryan presented the evidence to the State Attorney’s Office who advised to proceed with an arrest if the child was not attending school today. After checking with school officials, Deputy Bryan confirmed the student’s absence and responded to the defendant’s residence. She was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Bradford County Jail. She will be released without posting a bond under the stipulation she guarantees her son’s future attendance in school.

Sheriff Gordon Smith stated: “education is the best crime prevention. The Bradford County Sheriff’s Office will continue to work closely with the Bradford County School Board to insure our kids are being given every opportunity to succeed in life.”
