ZEPHYRHILLS, FL, AUGUST 6, 2009: It is with deep sadness that the Zephyrhills Police Department announces the in the line of duty death of police K-9 Gunner. Gunner was a 4 year old black German Shepherd who was partnered with Officer Joseph Rinaldo. Officer Rinaldo and Gunner responded to a burglary in progress call at a commercial building at 5747 Gall Blvd. in Zephyrhills. The suspects were inside the building when Gunner was sent inside through the back door. Both suspects fled out the front door in separate directions. Arriving back up officers gave chase on foot. K-9 Gunner also pursued out of the building across Gall Blvd. Due to the proximity of back up officers Gunner was called off. During Gunners recall to his handler he crossed Gall Blvd. and was struck and killed by a SUV. Both suspects were apprehended by back up officers.

Funeral arrangements will be completed and released as soon as possible.
