Tobacco Compliancy Check, March 31, 2010

On 03/31/10, members of the Benicia Police Department's Investigations Unit conducted a minor tobacco sting at various locations throughout Benicia. Solano County Friday Night Live Partnership assisted with the decoy operation and provided the minor decoy that attempted to purchase cigarettes in Benicia. The Benicia Police Department partnerships with Friday Night Live two to four times a year to conduct these stings. Funding for the compliancy checks is provided by Solano County, Reducing Rates Coalition.

The 16-year-old male minor decoy entered 12 businesses and attempted to purchase cigarettes. All of the businesses requested Identification from the decoy. It has been the goal of the Benicia Police Department to have all Benicia Businesses in total compliance. During this decoy operation none of the businesses sold cigarettes to the minor decoy.

The goal of the program is zero sales, zero citations, tobacco free and healthier youth. Total compliance with tobacco sales laws is the department's mission. Youth Services Detective Edward Criado was the lead detective.

"Our merchants are unaware that a decoy will be coming into their store, so the high level of compliance is encouraging," Det. Sgt. Scott Przekurat said. "Our goal is to ensure that the establishments in town selling tobacco products are diligent in asking for identification and then refusing to sell to any minors."
