Operation ‘Swift Strike’ Targets Drug Trafficking

Lancaster, SC (Wednesday, 03/24/2010) – On March 24, 2010, at 4:00 PM, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Drug/Gang Task Force, A unit comprised of Lancaster County and City Law Enforcement Officers, launched a crime suppression initiative that spanned across Lancaster County. The purpose of the operation was to set in motion a proactive law enforcement response to certain high-crime areas of Lancaster County through the efforts of narcotics investigations and arrest warrant service. This operation will be a joint action conducted with the Lancaster County Patrol Division, Investigations Division, Communications Division, Corrections Division, Community Action Team (CAT) and SWAT Team. Men and women from these divisions will be organized into several Strike Teams to implement the proactive law enforcement response in the county under the moniker, ‘Operation Swift Strike.’ This operation is a spinoff of ‘Operation New Year’s Resolution’ that occurred in January of 2009 and has been ongoing for the last several months.

One of the primary objectives of the operation was to target suppliers dealing with larger quantities of drugs working upward into the hierarchy of the drug trade in Lancaster County. Another objective was to serve warrants targeting drug offenders, and others with outstanding warrants throughout Lancaster County.

During the course of the operation, 67 individuals were arrested/charged with 103 offenses. Of these 103 offenses, 98 were drug violations, 2 offenses were Assault and Battery with Intent to Kill, 1 for Failure to Stop For a Blue Light, as well as 2 weapons violations offenses.

The general objectives of the operation were to target the drug trade in Lancaster County and target specific high-crime areas. Those objectives were reached with varying levels of success. In addition, ‘Operation Swift Strike’ has promoted communication, coordination and cooperation within the elements of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office and will help foster greater community confidence as the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, under the leadership of Sheriff Barry S. Faile, continues to follow the goals he set for this agency when he first took office in 2009. Sheriff Barry S. Faile said, “We all need to realize that the social cost of drug-related crimes are huge, hopefully this operation, and the one we had last year will begin to cause these criminals to rethink their strategy.”
