I-30 at Fielder Road re-opened about 2:30 p.m. from the fatal multi-vehicle wreck likely caused by ice on overpass.
Arlington police responded to a multiple vehicle wreck on the westbound lanes of Interstate 30 at Fielder Road at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday, March 21, 2010. Early into the investigation officers learned that one person died in the wreck involving two 18-wheelers and as many as five vehicles. The westbound lanes of the highway remain shut down and some lanes of eastbound Interstate 30 have also been closed, as investigators begin to determine the circumstances surrounding the major accident. Road conditions, possibly ice, are believed to have been a factor in the fatal wreck.
It appears that one of the 18-wheelers fell onto a vehicle, resulting in the fatality. The identity of the deceased will be released by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner. This is the 6th traffic fatality in Arlington this year.
UPDATE: Interstate 30 at Fielder Road re-opened at about 2:30 p.m. The investigation into the circumstances leading up to the fatal crash is ongoing, but it appears that at least two vehicles were involved in the initial wreck. That incident apparently caused subsequent crashes with other vehicles on the slick roadway. In total there were five cars, two trucks and two 18-wheelers involved in this crash.
The identity of the deceased man will be released through the Tarrant County Medical Examiner once the next of kin have been notified.
