Sunoco Logistics is performing work on a crude oil line in SE Hurst, producing a strong odor, but no hazard.
Sunoco Logistics is performing work on a crude oil line in SE Hurst. The work calls for the pressurization of the line with Nitrogen gas, then the pressure is released as the tests are completed. This release causes a crude oil odor in the air.
The times of the releases will vary but will continue through March 26.
The odor that is being generated is from crude oil, not from any natural gas products.
Periodic air monitoring is being performed by Sunoco and TCEQ. No dangerous level of airborne product has been found.
The odor is being generated in large scale when the pressure is being released. Odor around the site will remain from the tanks storing the residual crude oil. The tanks are being drained as the work continues, but the empty tanks will have the same odor. The tanks will be removed when the work is completed.
As testing completes and the line is refilled with crude oil, the “air” inside the line will have to be bled once again, causing a large amount of the crude oil smell, again this will occur periodically through next Friday.
