Advisory

Flood watch in effect for Hoboken; Report clogged catch basins; Do not move barricades

The City of Hoboken is under a National Weather Service (NWS) flood watch, through tomorrow evening with the potential for flooding caused by excessive rainfall.

The NWS is forecasting a slow-moving system with multiple rounds of heavy showers and thunderstorms today into tomorrow, with average rainfall between 2 and 3 inches, and peak rainfall rates as high as 2.5 inches per hour.

Residents are reminded that the city can experience flooding in low-lying, flood-prone areas if more than 0.8 inches of rain per hour falls, particularly around high tide, which will be at approximately 8:50 p.m.

Barricades in place; Do not move or go around barricades

The Hoboken Office of Emergency Management (OEM), Signal and Traffic Division, and Hoboken Police have staged barricades in low-lying, flood-prone areas, and will deploy them as needed.

DO NOT drive around or move barricades. They are there for your safety, and in some cases, can prevent wake waters that cause even greater damage.

Floodwaters can be deeper than they appear and cause vehicles to stall, which can impact emergency response times. Residents should not walk or drive through floodwater.

Report clogged catch basins

Clogged catch basins can significantly impede drainage during heavy rainfall events and lead to more severe flooding.

Residents should report clogged catch basins to the NHSA hotline at (866) 689-3970.
