Wednesday February 17th, 2010 :: 04:53 p.m. EST

At about 10:20 P.M. Tuesday, February 16, 2010, Newport News Police Patrol Officers responded to the CVS Pharmacy in the 13000 block of Warwick Boulevard to a report of a possible robbery suspect having been in the store. At about 10:25 P.M. a patrol sergeant was advised that a subject matching the same description had attempted to rob the Raceway in the 300 block of Oyster Point Road and that the owner had forcibly removed the suspect from the store. The suspect had left the area on foot. Patrol officers set up a perimeter and began looking for the suspect who was located nearby in the 6100 block of Reserve Way. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and has been charged with one count each of robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and has been placed in the custody of the Newport News City Jail.

The suspect is identified as David Preston Craft, 30, of the 300 block of Whealton Road in Hampton.

Investigations into other similar robberies are continuing and, as a result of the ongoing investigation, a booking photo of Mr. Craft will be temporarily withheld.

Of note in this case is the fact that, as a result of media coverage of a previous robbery at a different CVS Pharmacy, the clerk at this CVS recognized the person as a possible suspect in that case. Once again, the media and the community have played a vital role in solving crime.
