Please reduce your speed on side streets as children may be out playing.

The Oak Island Police Department would like to remind everyone that as the weather continues to get nicer, more and more people will be out. The weather coupled with it getting closer to schools letting out means that there will be more children out playing also.

During this time, as with all times, we should be vigilant while we drive and be prepared for children playing on the side streets, people out walking, and of course other drivers.

We must be mindful of our speeds, especially where we might encounter pedestrians or bicyclists.

As a reminder, the speed limits on the side streets are 35 MPH from 79th Street and going west. From Crowell to McGalmery and all of the side streets in this area, the speed limit is 25 MPH.

The speed limit is the maximum allowed on the street but we should always slow down when we see others using the street also.
