We have had reports of Irish Travelers in the Buford area. Use caution in dealing with out of town workers.

Irish Travelers are modern-day gypsies who belong to a very close-knit and secretive community. They travel through areas and offer to do home repairs, driveway paving, and other similar jobs for low prices with leftover materials. They will want cash and they will want all or most of it up front. They do substandard work with poor quality materials and leave. They have been through Lancaster County several times this winter are even more active in the spring and summer. They are normally out of the county before we get the first reports.

Do not be deceived. As always, if an offer looks too good to be true then it probably is. If you need work done to or around your home, locate and contact a reputable worker rather than relying on someone who happens to stop at your house. This is especially true when the person is not from the local area. Most of the Irish Travelers live in the area of Aiken County and they may change their names frequently. The often drive nice, newer model pick-ups that may not look like a “work truck”. Please be careful when accepting work offers from strangers.
