Advisory

Pasadena, other cities & the Better Business Bureau seek to protect residents from potential scams or identity theft.

A badge, Department of Commerce’s Census Bureau canvas bag and confidentiality leaflet are the three items a resident should look for before giving information to anyone who says they work for the U.S. Census, advises the city of Pasadena.

Residents should note that Census workers are out now verifying addresses; however, residents need not invite anyone to enter their homes.

What a U.S. Census worker will ask prior to April 1 is how many people live at your address. What they will never ask is for your social security, bank account, or credit card number. They will not ask your legal status, and they will not contact you by email, so be sure not to open any attachment from an email that identifies it as from the Census.

Recognize that person from around the neighborhood? Local residents are being hired as temporary Census workers. Nonetheless, these local Census workers should have a badge, bag, and confidentiality leaflet.

If by mid-April households have not filled out and mailed back the Census survey form that was mailed to them, then Census workers will begin contacting residents by telephone, mail or in person at home to ensure an accurate count.

At no point can Census workers and the Census Bureau legally share your answers with anyone, including police or immigration agencies.

Based on the official 2010 count, the federal government will give millions of dollars in funding to Pasadena and Los Angeles County for schools, health care, social services, transportation and more.
