***Crime Prevention Tip - Copper Theft ***

Unfortunately, copper theft has become an all too common occurrence. This has been happening throughout the United States, so it is not a problem unique to the City of Longwood. Therefore, the Longwood Police Department would like to offer the following tips to help prevent the theft of copper items from your property.

Remove the landscaping or other materials from around the air conditioner unit to improve the surveillance of the area. This will allow people passing by the area to notice if a theft is taking place.

Install or improve the lighting over your air conditioner units. Thieves like to work under the cover of darkness to avoid being detected. Improved lighting may make the area less attractive to the passing criminal.

Use an engraver to engrave the address of the property onto various places on the air conditioner units. Avoid using the property owner’s information since this may change often, whereas the property address will remain the same. This, again, makes your ac unit less desirable for the criminal.

Consider placing a secure cage around your unit, such as the ones pictured. Internet research revealed a variety of vendors and costs for ac cages. If a criminal had to choose between a caged ac unit, or an open unit, they will choose the one that requires less work --- therefore less of a likelihood they will get caught.

Finally, ensure that any theft is reported to the Longwood Police Department.

It is important for you to take the above precautions to help prevent the theft of the copper from you property. If you suspect that someone has entered your property illegally, we invite you to contact us prior to searching it at (407) 339-1297. The Longwood Police Department would like offer these tips to you, and remind you to stay safe.
