Internet fraud involving house posted for rent on Craig's List.

The Lower Paxton Police Department is investigating a case in which a resident's home was falsely placed on Craig's List, for rent.

On January 22nd, a Penbrook resident (victim) was checking houses for rent on Craig's List. He found a townhouse with a Lower Paxton address listed for rent. The victim responded by e-mail to the listing and later spoke to an individual who identified themselves as "Flanagan Kelly". The victim decided to rent the house and wired, by Western Union, money to cover a security deposit and first months rent to "Flanagan Kelly".

It was later learned that the house was not up for rent and the legitimate owner did not authorize the listing. It was later learned that the area code for the "Flanagan Kelly" phone number, belongs to West Africa.

We caution the public, to exercise caution when engaging in cash transactions, where the other party wants you to wire them money. The act of wiring money for a purchase, where the initial contact was via the internet or through a phone or mail solicitation is a common scam. Often the money is wired out of the country and prosecution is practically impossible.

Know who you are dealing with. The internet is full of people who seek to defraud others. Exercise caution when making these types of transactions. A good idea, before wiring money in a similiar circumstance, is to contact the Police or discuss the transacction with another trusted party.
